Granite Cracks
Cracks can be deep into the granite and are generally behind the sink and between the sink cut out and the front edge of the countertop, typically due to water penetration and lack of the sealer.
Granite cracks may happen from poor installation process, lack of maintenance, sealing application, use, and sometimes they may even be natural.
A crack can be caused around the sink area during transportation, or from improper handling of the granite, some fabricators insert a metal bar under the thin areas by the sink to keep it together.
The metal bar can become a problem when water penetration happens and cause a crack for lack of sealer and missing silicone between the granite and the sink.
While granite is durable and hard, dropping a heavy pot or any other object can cause a crack.
If countertops are not level or flat this can lead to various problems, like cracking, seam splitting and any excessive weight can damage or crack your granite countertop
While granite is formed hard and naturally as heat resistant, I recommend to avoid excessive heat and too much pressure on the granite, specially on the seams, fissures and crack repairs.
Oc Countertop can help you find the solution for your granite countertop crack, and repair it to look as inconspicuous possible.
Depending on the lighting in your home and the pattern or your Countertop colors, some repairs may stand out more than others.
Remember a fissure is natural vein in your countertop while a crack may occur from poor fabrication, transportation, or installation process.
Granite Fissures
Veining, pitting, and fissures are naturally part of the granite, and that makes the natural and uniqueness look of your countertop.
Granite natural fissures can actually weaken the countertop and would potentially become cracks if not taken care or repair correctly.
Granite cracks, fissures and seams are not the same:
- Fissures are natural within the granite
- Seams are man made to glue two pieces together.
- Cracks can be natural or man cause.
Granite Seams
Seams need to be maintenance properly to avoid water penetration and damage the plywood which will expand and make your Countertop not level, also avoid anything hot on top of the seams, and have a countertop specialist to replace the poxy if need it.
